My name is Marissa Lee, and currently I study single molecule spectroscopy in W. E. Moerner’s lab at Stanford. Fun fact — Erwin Schrödinger, one of the fathers of quantum mechanics, wrote that “experimenting with single particles” was as ridiculous and impossible as it would be to “raise Ichthyosauria at the zoo” (Br. J. Phil. Sci. 3:109 1952). Dinosaurs remain fossilized bones, but detecting single molecules is routinely done. Some of my research using single molecules is summarized below.
